I’m usually a Kindle girl, but as I was going abroad for the first time in MANY years this summer, I thought, for sitting round the pool, paperbacks might be more appropriate / less likely to be stolen.
Being a historical romance girl at heart, I decided to take a book from each of my favourite authors and got through 4 out of the 5 of them – I did have kids with me. Jane Lark, Teresa Medeiros, Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas finished first, and I still have Gaelen Foley to go. Point was, I enjoyed being back with a paperback. I liked having a cover in colour. I liked being able to see how far through the book I was. I also liked being able to flick back easily to check on something from before. The things I missed were the integrated dictionary, and the (anal) ability to highlight errors as I found them. (Lisa, I’m looking at you here – your editor this time was pants!) I was also a little put off by the size of the remaining paperback - I kid you not, it's almost A4!
So will I convert back? Tricky. Yes I enjoyed the experience, but now I’m home, they do take up a lot more room, and this is limited in my house as I have a husband who buys books all the time and I am restricted to 3 shelves in the entire house, where I also have to place my own! On a separate note, my Kindle wasn’t happy abroad and wouldn’t let me download anything new – I took it along for the evenings.
So, on reflection, I may not have reverted completely to paperbacks, but I feel now, I am at least, bilingual. What's your experience?
